Exceptional Parents Unlimited (EPU) is a family-centered organization dedicated to empowering parents and supporting children with special needs throughout Central California. Founded in 1976 by Marion M. Karian as a small support group for parents of children with Down syndrome, EPU has grown into a comprehensive agency serving over 4,000 children and families each year. Today, it provides a wide range of programs designed to help families build healthier relationships, strengthen emotional resilience, and foster positive development in children.
EPU’s services are offered in English, Spanish, Hmong, and American Sign Language to ensure accessibility for all families. The organization’s departments include Early Learning and Intervention, Child Development, Family Resource and Parent Training Centers, and Mental Health Services. Through these programs, EPU offers parenting classes, counseling, behavioral support, and educational resources to help parents understand and manage challenges such as stress, frustration, and anger that can arise in family life. Their anger management resources help parents and caregivers learn constructive ways to express emotions, promote calm communication, and model positive behavior for their children.
With a team of over 120 professionals—including therapists, mental health clinicians, case managers, and educators—EPU focuses on strengthening families through compassion, inclusion, and education. Whether through home visits, group sessions, or workshops, EPU continues to inspire hope and growth by helping parents become confident advocates and role models for their children’s well-being.
