Arizona law mandates substance abuse screenings for individuals suspected of DUI. Approved providers conduct thorough assessments using standardized protocols to evaluate substance use history and impairment. These screenings help identify individuals in need of further evaluation, intervention, or treatment, addressing the root causes of impaired driving, promoting rehabilitation, and enhancing road safety. This proactive approach aims to reduce future incidents and foster positive behavioral changes.

For convicted offenders, Arizona mandates a 16-hour DUI education program to address drunk driving. This program covers topics such as alcohol’s effects, legal consequences, risks, and safety, aiming to raise awareness, knowledge, and responsible behavior. It serves as a preventive measure to reduce repeat offenses by promoting responsible decision-making and alternative transportation options.

Level I DUI education and treatment involve a comprehensive 16-hour education program and an additional 20 hours of treatment. This approach targets moderate substance abuse, providing evidence-based practices for recovery. The treatment component offers counseling, support, and coping mechanisms to address underlying causes, equipping individuals for long-term recovery and preventing repeat offenses.

For individuals with revoked driving privileges, a thorough evaluation by a licensed substance abuse counselor is required to assess their ability to drive safely and responsibly. Successful completion of this evaluation and meeting all necessary requirements set by ADOT are essential for reinstating driving privileges in Arizona.

Additionally, ADOT suspends driving privileges for 90 days for those suspected of DUI, with the possibility of driving again after 30 days upon completing a screening. This screening applies to both ADOT and the court, if convicted.
