The DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program (RRP), commonly known as DUI schools, is a state-regulated intervention program mandated for individuals convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI), drug possession, underage alcohol possession while driving, or Boating Under the Influence (BUI). This program, overseen by the Department of Driver Services (DDS), consists of two essential components: an Assessment Component and an Intervention Component. The total cost for the course is $360, which includes a $100 fee for the Assessment, $235 for the Intervention, and a $25 materials fee.
The Assessment Component, taking approximately 30 minutes to an hour, employs a comprehensive 130-question questionnaire to evaluate the individual’s alcohol and drug use and its impact on driving. Following this, the Intervention Component spans 20 hours, delivered in a group setting, focusing on therapeutic education and peer counseling about the effects of substance use on driving behavior. Successful completion of both components is required to obtain a certificate of completion.
For those with two or more DUI convictions within ten years, a clinical evaluation and potential treatment are necessary for license reinstatement. It’s important to note that the DDS does not accept certificates from online DUI risk reduction courses for any licensing purposes. Only specific assessment and intervention programs, such as NEEDS and Prime for Life, are approved by the DDS for use in Georgia, ensuring that individuals receive the appropriate support and education to address their substance use issues effectively.
