The Greenwood City Court serves Johnson County, handling a significant caseload of misdemeanors, infractions, and violations of Greenwood city ordinances. It stands out as the only city court in Indiana operating a state-certified Problem Solving Court, which includes specialized programs like the Greenwood Recovery Court and Alcohol and Drug Services Program. The Recovery Court, the first state-certified drug court in the U.S., is also recognized as one of the nation’s first hybrid courts, addressing both drunk driving and traditional drug offenses. These programs aim to help individuals with substance use issues recover, rebuild their lives, and reintegrate as law-abiding, productive citizens.
DUI-related services are a key focus of the Greenwood City Court’s programs. The Recovery Court is tailored for individuals struggling with long-term alcohol or drug dependency, especially those who have not succeeded in traditional treatment programs. For cases where substance use problems are less severe, the Alcohol and Drug Services Program identifies specific issues and provides targeted interventions to address alcohol- and drug-related offenses.
The Court’s innovative programs are supported entirely through participant fees and federal or state grants, with no reliance on city tax dollars. Both the judge and staff have undergone extensive specialized training to operate these transformative initiatives effectively. In addition to its focus on DUI and substance use cases, the Greenwood City Court handles misdemeanors like theft, motor vehicle violations, and public disturbances, as well as traffic infractions. With its commitment to rehabilitation and public safety, the Court plays a vital role in addressing substance use issues and fostering positive change within the community.
