The DUI/DWI Early Education Program offers essential services for individuals convicted under Transportation Article 21-902, including those who are mandated, encouraged, or voluntarily attending. The program begins with a comprehensive assessment that evaluates areas such as alcohol and drug use, mental health, employment, legal status, and social systems. This assessment is accepted from certified clinicians or programs, with results to be submitted within a 45-day window.
Participants are required to attend six weekly 2-hour sessions, totaling 12 hours of education. The curriculum covers crucial topics like drinking and driving patterns, the scope of alcohol-related problems, addiction processes, the pharmacology of alcohol and drugs, and available treatment resources. The program also addresses the relationship between substance use and criminal, health, family, and social issues.
Instructors for the program are certified Supervised Counselors (CSC) in Alcohol and Drug treatment or hold equivalent licensure. If necessary, the program provides referrals to additional treatment programs and ensures that all responsible parties are informed of the assessment results and any referrals made. This structured and comprehensive approach aims to educate participants and guide them toward a path of recovery, addressing both the legal and personal consequences of impaired driving.
