The DUI Education program at Positive Steps is designed for individuals charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), specifically first-time offenders whose only issue is impaired driving. The program focuses on raising awareness of alcohol and drug use patterns, promoting healthy decision-making, and encouraging responsible behavior. Its primary goal is to prevent recidivism by helping participants understand the consequences of impaired driving and the significance of their charges. Through informative, interactive sessions, clients learn about the effects of alcohol and drugs on the mind and body, as well as the legal and social consequences of impaired driving.
The program aims to facilitate behavioral change by encouraging participants to assess their own substance use patterns and understand the influence of family dynamics. It also provides information on available treatment resources and encourages involvement in 12 Step support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous. Over six two-hour sessions, clients cover topics such as the physiological effects of alcohol, decision-making, family influence, and relapse prevention. Participants are expected to engage in group discussions and complete worksheets, with successful completion requiring a passing score of at least 75% on the post-test. The program is structured to meet the legal obligations associated with DUI charges while promoting a zero-tolerance approach to impaired driving in the future.
