The Alcohol Highway Safety Classes and DUI Assessment program in Berrien County focuses on substance abuse prevention for youth, emphasizing the importance of academic success and healthy choices. With children spending significant time at school, educational institutions play a crucial role in delivering effective prevention programs for alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. The program partners with the Berrien County Intermediate School District to assist 5th grade teachers in educating students on the dangers of substance abuse. Utilizing the Michigan Model for Health curriculum, an evidence-based and nationally recognized program, the initiative reaches approximately 1,200 students annually, promoting knowledge on the harmful effects of substances like alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and inhalants.
The curriculum covers key topics, including the influence of family, friends, advertising, and media, as well as teaching refusal skills. Prevention Specialists extend their efforts to 7th-grade students and youth groups, offering tailored presentations on various substance-related issues such as prescription drug abuse, alcohol and tobacco dangers, marijuana use, and trends in methamphetamine abuse. These presentations are designed to address the specific needs and concerns of the community and are offered at no cost. The program aims to build life skills that empower youth to make informed decisions and resist substance use pressures.
