The Sanilac County Health Department (SCHD) offers a variety of adult courses designed to support individuals in improving their well-being. These courses are available free of charge and can be voluntary or referred by external agencies such as Child Protection Services, Probation, or healthcare providers. The classes are not intended for treatment but rather for prevention, helping individuals address potential future behaviors, thoughts, or emotions. Participation and attendance are required, and participants receive a certificate of completion once they finish the entire series.
Currently, SCHD offers several adult programs, including Anger Management, Alcohol Highway Safety Education, Botvin Life Skills, Courage To Change, Prime for Life, and Trauma in Life. Among these, the Alcohol Highway Safety Education program is a one-time, two-hour class that focuses on the impact of substance use on driving abilities and overall health. The course aims to help participants understand the consequences of alcohol and drug use, including legal, financial, and personal impacts. It also covers the effects of substances on behavior, the body, and relationships, while exploring the differences between responsible use and misuse. Participants are encouraged to evaluate their own substance use, understand how thoughts and feelings influence behavior, and create a plan to avoid future issues with alcohol or drugs, particularly in relation to impaired driving.
