The Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education (AWARE) Driver Intervention Program (DIP) is a 72-hour educational initiative designed for individuals facing their first offense of driving under the influence (DUI) or operating a vehicle impaired (OVI). This program serves as a viable alternative to a mandatory minimum three-day jail sentence, providing courts the option to recommend it based on the circumstances of each case. Unlike traditional incarceration, the AWARE DIP is conducted in a supportive public environment, featuring small group discussions that promote interaction and learning.
Participants engage in a comprehensive curriculum that covers the consequences of substance use, the impact of alcohol and drugs on driving abilities, and the signs of addiction. They also receive an alcohol and drug assessment and referrals for further treatment, ensuring a holistic approach to recovery. The program often takes place in hotel settings, allowing participants to reside on-site and fully immerse themselves in the learning experience.
The benefits of the AWARE DIP extend beyond avoiding jail time; individuals often find the program informative and transformative, equipping them with the knowledge to make healthier lifestyle choices. Upon completion, facilitators prepare a DIP completion report for the court, demonstrating the participant's commitment to change. Offered by the Lake Area Recovery Center and certified by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, the AWARE Driver Intervention Program aims to foster positive outcomes and reduce recidivism among individuals charged with DUI or OVI offenses.
