The Ohio Driver Intervention Program (DIP) offers an alternative to the mandatory three-day jail term for first-time offenders convicted of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Instead of incarceration, these individuals may participate in a DIP upon the court’s discretion. The program focuses on traffic safety and educating participants on alcohol and substance use disorders, as well as incorporating small group discussions. Typically held over two or three days, DIPs provide participants with a comprehensive educational experience, which may also include referrals for additional alcohol and drug assessments.
DIPs are usually conducted in hotels and are certified by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS). Information on DIP locations, dates, and times is often available at courthouses, and OhioMHAS offers a directory of providers for easy access. The program does involve a fee, but some participants who receive public assistance may be eligible for state aid to cover costs.
The curriculum in Ohio’s DIP covers various aspects of substance use and driving laws, including the implications of license suspension, fines, and incarceration. It also provides participants with tools and resources for managing alcohol and substance use disorders. Topics include understanding blood alcohol content, symptoms of substance use disorders, the impact of substance dependence, and the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving performance. For further assistance, OhioMHAS provides additional resources and contact information.
