The Driver Intervention Program (DIP) aims to provide courts with effective alternatives to mandatory jail time for first-time offenders charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. As outlined by Ohio law, the program serves as a two- or three-day educational course that focuses on traffic safety and substance use awareness. Participants engage in group discussions and receive education on critical topics such as levels of license suspension, treatment resources for substance use disorders, and the physiological effects of substances on driving abilities.

The curriculum is designed to address various aspects of alcohol and drug use, including the symptoms and signs of addiction, the progressive nature of dependency, and the social and psychological consequences of substance abuse. Additionally, the program provides referrals for comprehensive alcohol and drug assessments as needed. By focusing on education and intervention, the DIP aims to reduce recidivism rates among offenders and promote a better understanding of the risks associated with substance use.

The program is available to offenders in Darke and Preble Counties and is conducted in certified venues. Sessions typically begin on Friday evenings, concluding on Sundays, with meals and refreshments provided. The fees for the program are $375 for the 48-hour class and $425 for the 72-hour class, with advance payment required to secure a spot.
