Intervention services provide educational and treatment programs primarily for individuals cited for offenses, offering an alternative to traditional legal penalties. These services focus on education related to the citation and guidance on decision-making to prevent future violations. Referrals come from various sources, including law enforcement, legal authorities, and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The South Carolina Alcohol and Drug Safety Action Program (ADSAP) is a mandatory statewide initiative aimed at reducing risks for those convicted of impaired driving offenses. The program employs the Prime for Life curriculum, delivered in a group setting that typically meets twice a week for four weeks. Participants engage in interactive sessions to learn about making low-risk choices related to alcohol and drug use, helping them to protect what they value most and to develop effective personal strategies.

South Carolina law mandates that individuals convicted of offenses such as Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Boating Under the Influence (BUI), Implied Consent, or Driving with Unlawful Alcohol Concentration (DUAC) must complete ADSAP before they can be considered for relicensing by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. The program’s goal is to enhance highway safety through assessment, education, and intervention to lower the risk of reoffending.

To start enrollment, individuals must schedule an ADSAP assessment and bring required documentation, including a picture ID, arrest paperwork, a recent driving record, a reinstatement requirement letter from the DMV, and a list of current medications. The assessment will determine if only the 16-hour Prime for Life program is needed or if additional treatment services are required, which may involve extra fees.
