New Beginnings Driving Under the Influence Program
If you've been charged with a DUI in Kentucky, the process for license reinstatement begins with an assessment by a licensed DUI provider. Following your arrest, your license will be suspended either at the initial arraignment or upon conviction. The assessment involves a thorough interview to develop your social history and includes completing the AUDIT and DAST screening inventories. These tools help the assessor determine the appropriate intervention tailored to your needs, which may include educational courses, outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, residential treatment, or detox services, depending on the severity of your substance use.
For first-time and multiple offenders, the state mandates participation in the “PRI DRIVING UNIMPAIRED 20 HOUR” education program, the only authorized curriculum in Kentucky. This program can be conducted in three or fewer sessions per week, with each session lasting no more than three hours. Additionally, outpatient treatment programs typically utilize an open enter/exit group format, allowing new participants to join at any time.
It's important to understand that the penalties for DUI offenses in Kentucky are cumulative, becoming more severe with each subsequent conviction within a ten-year period. Engaging in the New Beginnings program can be a critical step toward regaining your driving privileges and addressing substance use issues effectively.
