The Impaired Driver Program (IDP) at the Allegany Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Inc. (ACASA) is a collaborative initiative with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) aimed at educating motorists convicted of alcohol or drug-related driving offenses. This seven-week program includes a minimum of 16 hours of classroom instruction, designed to inform participants about the serious effects and consequences of impaired driving. Although participation is voluntary, a judge may impose this program as part of a conditional or rehabilitative sentence.
During the program, participants are granted a conditional driver’s license by the DMV to meet their basic transportation needs. Successful completion of the IDP, along with any required rehabilitation, treatment, or DMV-imposed restrictions, may lead to the restoration of full driving privileges.
To enroll in the Impaired Driver Program, all participants must register through the Department of Motor Vehicles.
