The New York State Impaired Driver Program (IDP), formerly known as the Drinking Driver Program, offers motorists a pathway to regain their driving privileges if suspended or revoked due to an alcohol or drug-related conviction. By participating in this program, individuals may become eligible for a conditional driver’s license or full restoration of their driving rights.
To enroll in the IDP, motorists must first visit their local DMV office to register and receive information on class availability and start dates. Enrollment is restricted to those referred by the DMV. SUNY Broome, which has been a sponsor of the IDP since 1975, offers classes on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 pm and Saturday mornings at 9:00 am in Binghamton (Broome County). The program fee is $233, and participants can pay via Mastercard, Visa, cash, check, or money order.
The IDP at SUNY Broome spans 16 hours over seven sessions, held in a safe, confidential, and accessible classroom setting. The program is part of New York’s broader initiative to reduce the harm caused by impaired driving. With guidance from experienced educational staff, participants explore the social, medical, legal, and safety issues related to alcohol and drug abuse. The program includes classroom education, and where necessary, screening, assessment, and treatment. For registration and further details, participants should contact the SUNY Broome Continuing Education Office at 607-778-5012.
