The Impaired Driver Program (IDP) in New York State is an educational initiative for drivers convicted of DWI/DWAI offenses. The program's goal is to reduce the likelihood of future alcohol or drug-related driving incidents by educating participants on high-risk behaviors and promoting safer driving practices.
The curriculum, developed by The Change Company, focuses on helping individuals identify and change high-risk alcohol and drug choices. The program emphasizes "journaling" to encourage participants to reflect on their behaviors and apply what they learn to real-life situations. This approach aims to foster positive, lasting change and help individuals regain their driving privileges.
The IDP is part of New York State’s broader effort to reduce the incidence of injury, disability, and fatalities resulting from alcohol and drug-related motor vehicle crashes. By educating drivers and promoting behavior change, the program also aims to reduce the risk of repeat offenses.
The IDP consists of 16 hours of instruction spread over seven weeks, with classes held once a week. The program is offered in several counties, including Chemung, Livingston, Schuyler, and Wyoming. The cost is $234, which must be paid before the first class.
To participate, eligible drivers must first enroll through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Court-referred drivers, even if not eligible for a conditional license, must also register through the DMV. Attendance is mandatory for all 16 hours, and failure to meet the program's requirements will result in being dropped from the IDP and losing driving privileges. For more information or to schedule a class, contact an IDP instructor at (585) 278-7080.
