The St. Lawrence County Impaired Driver Program (IDP) is a critical component of New York State's initiative to reduce impaired driving incidents. If convicted of an alcohol or drug-related driving violation, individuals may face revocation or suspension of their driving privileges in New York State. Eligible individuals who apply for a conditional license will be mandated to participate in the IDP, which allows limited driving privileges under certain conditions. The program may also be court-mandated as part of a sentence, regardless of eligibility for a conditional license.
To enroll in the St. Lawrence County IDP, individuals must sign up at any local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office in the county. Enrollment requires a valid driver’s license or proof of identity, along with a $75 nonrefundable fee. The program costs an additional $233, with potential extra fees for class transfers or re-entry if dropped from the program.
Participants must attend all seven weekly classroom sessions, totaling 16 hours. Classes are held at the St. Lawrence County Human Services Center in Canton and the Franklin County facility in Malone. Punctuality and active participation are mandatory, and missing sessions may delay completion by up to six weeks. Failure to complete all phases, including any required substance abuse evaluation or treatment, will result in the loss of conditional driving privileges, with the original suspension or revocation reinstated.
