Northpointe Council offers the Impaired Driver Program (IDP) as part of its mission to provide high-quality, person-centered services to individuals affected by substance use disorders and other addictions in the Greater Niagara Area. The IDP is designed for individuals convicted of driving while impaired, helping them to understand the consequences of their actions and providing them with tools for self-assessment and early intervention.
The program, operated in conjunction with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, includes a comprehensive curriculum that addresses traffic safety, as well as the social, medical, and legal issues associated with alcohol and drug abuse. Participants are required to attend seven weekly classroom sessions, totaling 16 hours of instruction. Conditional licenses are only granted to motorists who are enrolled in the IDP. Recent legislation has also mandated participation in the IDP for all plea bargain cases related to impaired driving offenses.
The program not only aims to educate participants but also to refer them for further evaluation and treatment if necessary, promoting long-term behavioral change and reducing the risk of future offenses.
