The Ontario County Impaired Driver Program (IDP) is an integral part of New York State's initiative to reduce injuries, disabilities, and fatalities resulting from alcohol and drug-related motor vehicle incidents. This program aims to lower the risk of re-offense for impaired driving violations. Participants in the IDP must attend seven weekly classroom sessions, each lasting between 2 to 3 hours, totaling 16 hours. Successful completion of these sessions typically concludes your participation in the program unless a formal assessment and treatment are required.
Upon meeting all program requirements, you will receive a "Notice of Completion," which will be electronically transmitted to the DMV. This may lead to the restoration of your license or eligibility to apply for a new one, depending on factors such as your driving record, age, and circumstances surrounding your offense. If you fail to attend classes, required evaluations, or treatment, or fail to pay program fees, you will be dropped from the IDP, resulting in the revocation of your conditional license. Re-entry into the program requires consent from the IDP director and payment of a $50 fee.
To enroll in the IDP, participants must pay a nonrefundable $75 fee to the DMV, along with an additional fee of up to $234 to the program itself. No cash payments are accepted. Depending on the course, participants may be referred to a NYS OASAS-approved provider for further evaluation and treatment, which involves additional fees. Ontario County offers IDP classes at various locations, including Newark High School and Finger Lakes Community College’s Canandaigua and Newark campuses.
