The New York State Impaired Driver Program (IDP) is a 16-hour educational course held over seven weeks. This program is designed to help individuals convicted of alcohol or drug-related driving offenses regain their driving privileges. Some participants may need to meet additional DMV requirements, including formal evaluations and treatment, to complete the program.
The total cost for the program is $233, in addition to a non-refundable $75 processing fee paid to the DMV upon enrollment. After registering at the DMV, participants must send a $233 money order to the Driver Safety Institute two business days before their first class. Personal checks are not accepted. If time is short, payment can be brought directly to the first class. Additional fees may apply if you need to transfer to another IDP or re-enter the program.
Classes are scheduled on seven consecutive Saturday mornings or weeknight evenings, each lasting up to 2½ hours. It’s essential to inform the DMV clerk if you have a preference for Saturday classes. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory, and lateness or absence can result in being dropped from the program and losing your conditional license. In the event of inclement weather, classes may be rescheduled.
Participants are expected to treat the staff and DMV clerks with courtesy and respect, as offensive behavior will lead to removal from the program. Failure to meet all DMV requirements, including evaluations and treatments, will also result in being dropped from the IDP and the loss of driving privileges.
