The Impaired Driver Program (IDP), formerly known as the Drinking Driving Program (DDP), is designed to reduce the incidence of impaired driving offenses, minimize injuries and fatalities resulting from impaired driving crashes, and enhance overall highway safety. The program's effectiveness in lowering the rate of DWI recidivism has been validated by the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research. Eligibility for the IDP is determined by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) following a DWI or DWAI conviction.
Upon enrollment in the program, most participants are granted conditional driving privileges, allowing limited driving under specific conditions. Successful completion of the program's requirements may lead to the restoration of full driving privileges. The IDP plays a crucial role in improving road safety by encouraging responsible driving behavior and reducing the likelihood of repeat offenses among participants.
