The Boulder Alcohol Education Center (BAEC) was founded on January 1, 1982, by Dr. John Gilburt and the late Stan Scott to address the community's need for accessible and affordable substance abuse treatment. Initially focusing on Drinking/Driving Education and Treatment, BAEC has expanded its services to include community education, training, and specialized programs for complex and dual diagnosis cases. Stan Scott, a pioneer in direct substance use education, believed that providing accurate information could motivate change, a principle that is now integral to most treatment programs. Following Stan’s passing in 1986, Dr. Gilburt continued to lead BAEC, emphasizing high-quality, well-trained staff and a commitment to integrity and excellence.

BAEC's philosophy centers on personal responsibility and a thorough understanding of problem behaviors to foster effective change. Over its 42-year history, BAEC has gained recognition for its effective programs and is considered one of Colorado's largest private outpatient treatment facilities. The center operates with a focus on privacy, respect, and dignity, adapting its approach to meet individual needs while complying with state guidelines and community judicial expectations.

Licensed by the Colorado Department of Behavioral Health, BAEC offers a variety of services, including Level II DUI/DUID/DWAI Education and Therapy, Offender Education & Treatment, Interlock Enhancement Counseling, Relapse Prevention, Minor in Possession (MIP) and Underage Substance Abuse groups, Marijuana Treatment Programs, and evaluations for various legal and professional purposes. Additionally, BAEC provides Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), individual counseling, and family support. All services are conducted online via Zoom, ensuring accessibility for clients statewide and beyond.
